Yucatan travel information
.
Magical land where the past becomes the present every day,
ancient land of eternal stories and wonders, of kind people and
traditions that contrast with its modernity, its amplitude to
the world, its technology centers, its industry and its deep-sea
port.
With a fascinating gastronomy, mixture of millenarian Mayan
recipes and Creole influences, it opens an almost infinite range
of possibilities for the palate.
Place where it is easy to lose oneself among the songs of birds
and the music of snails that embellish the lyrics of its trova
melodies.
Yucatan is diverse, it carries its history in its streets, its
houses, its museums, its reunion centers. It is full of
archaeological sites, like the great pyramid of Kukulkán, the
monumental Uxmal and the mystic Ek Balam, all of them wonderful,
as well as its colonial cities, tropical forests and mysterious
cenotes.
Yucatan is a land of fusions and contrasts that range from its
calm coasts to its vibrant night life. Its Haciendas are proud
witnesses of its past; its people, a Mayan culture that lives on,
and its visitors, tireless travelers to whom the land itself
gives shelter with its benign warmth and its refreshing morning
dew.
Yucatan Geography
Climate
Yucatan has a subtropical-tropical climate with temperatures
that oscillate most of the year between 28º and 35º C. In winter
the climate is cooler.
Tips for the traveller
The use of comfortable clothes is recommended, t-shirts and
loose trousers, closed comfortable shoes for the outskirts of
the city, and sandals for the beach. The use of sun blockers is
also recommended, and caps or hats are particularly useful.
Communication facilities
Due to its geographic position, Yucatan is a destination open to
the world, allowing a fast and secure aerial, marine and
terrestrial connectivity.
Both Cancún an the Mayan Riviera offer a privileged position
that allow visitors to delve deeper into the Mayan World:
Yucatan.
The International Airport of Merida “Manuel Crescencio Rejón”
and the International Airport of Chichen Itzá, minutes away from
this archaeological, world heritage site, facilitate the access
to the state for visitors.
Yucatan has several highways, among them two federal freeways,
and a modern highway. Highway 180 goes from Merida to Cancún,
and it is the fastest route for access to colonial cities and
archaeological sites like Izamal, Chichen Itzá and Valladolid,
among others.
Federal highway 261 goes from Merida to Uxmal, and it also
facilitates the connection between different zones of the Mayan
area and archaeological sites, as well as for the Convents and
Puuc routes.
The deep-sea port of Progreso in the Yucatan Peninsula, is a
touristic meeting point and a border open to the commercial
exchange with the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
The modern facilities of the port, as well as the region’s
productive and commercial sectors, give guarantees and security
for the import and export of merchandise between North and South
America, the islands of the Caribbean, Europe and Africa.
It has a viaduct and a duty free commercial center, with
restaurants, craft shops and boutiques.
Location
Yucatan is to the southeast of the Mexican Republic. Located in
the central part of the Yucatan Peninsula, it is contiguous to
the north with the Gulf of Mexico, to the southeast and east
with Quintana Roo and to the west and southwest with Campeche.
The territorial extension of the state is 43,379 km2, and it is
integrated by 106 municipalities, with Merida as the capital
Yucatan is a land rich in attractions for the traveler, ranging
from spectacular archaeological sites like Chichen Itzá - wonder
of the modern world -, the imposing Uxmal, city of kings, to
beautiful colonial cities with a deep historical legacy, such
as: the Merida, White City; Izamal, Magical Town of Mexico, and
the heiress of colonial times, Valladolid.
Its natural showcases and ecological reserves, like Celestún and
Río Lagartos, which harbor more than 400 species of birds,
contrast with the luxury and magnificence of its Haciendas, its
high level spas and its restaurants of international luxury.
As an added value to the wonders of the state you can also enjoy
a delicious gastronomy and places abundant in culture and
history. It also has all the technical and human facilities to
guarantee the success of your businesses and congresses.
Yucatan is the cradle of the Mayan culture and it has a
historical legacy like few territories in the world. Around its
outskirts rise majestic ceremonial centers, capital cities and
beautiful carved stone buildings of perfect architecture.
Chichen Itzá, Uxmal, Ek Balam, Dzibilchaltún, among many others,
are the legacy of one of the greatest civilizations of the world,
the Mayan civilization, which reveals its millenarian archives,
secrets, paths and wonders before the visitors who enter its
dominions.
We have approximately 1.600 archaeological zones, of which the
following are open to the public:
Yucatan is a state of abundant natural wealth, it gives home to
444 of the 547 species of birds registered in the peninsula,
which represent 50% of the birds reported in all the country.
Besides its fauna, it possesses an exuberant flora and natural
showcases of great beauty. As a result of the impact of a
meteorite 65 million years ago, a great network of underwater
caverns that we know today as cenotes was formed.
Yucatan allows a wide range of activities for lovers of nature
and adventure: trekking, zip-line rope climbing, cave -diving,
horse routes and bird watching, among many others.
Yucatan has an undeniable cultural and historical legacy that
transcends time and space. The yucatecan people have known how
to integrate their beliefs, celebrations and customs of old as a
fundamental part of their daily life, creating a magical
syncretism that is more alive than ever.
Its crafts, gastronomy, music and folklore, framed in a rhythm
of colors, flavors, sounds and textures, are the irrefutable
proof of a proud and cultured land, charming, welcoming with
open arms and offering itself to all visitors.
Yucatan is the cultural destination par excellence.
Due to their status as a multi-cultural state and vibrant
cosmopolitan city, Yucatan and Merida have become some of the
trendiest places in Mexico. Luxury, exclusiveness and comfort ,
show themselves in these luxurious properties of finest style
and care.
Originally from the time of the “green gold” (around the end of
1800), haciendas were born and made a living from the henequén
bonanza. By mid 1940, when synthetic fibers were created, the
henequén industry plummeted and with it, the splendor of
haciendas. In the last decade of the XX century, the haciendas
of Yucatan recovered economic growth and splendor, this time as
spots of perfect harmony for relaxation, reflection, and
meditation; but mostly to offer unique experiences to the
visitors of Yucatan.
In other times, machinery houses, today restaurants serving
contemporary Yucatan cuisine; before, stables and farmyards, now,
pools and spas; stately ranches of old, today real estate of
peculiar charm from Yucatan to the world.
Yucatan has a great tradition where it comes to relaxation and
well being. Ancestral Mayan medicine was one of the most
developed sciences among our ancestors. Many of their remedies
and millennial techniques, combined with the most avant-garde
facilities in an environment of stoic tranquility can be enjoyed
in these relaxation sites.
Starting from traditional Mayan techniques, going through zen
massages and spicing up the experience with spectacular natural
surroundings, Yucatan offers the very best to pamper tourists.
Spas can be found mostly at haciendas and boutique hotels.
Yucatan is today one of the main tourist destinations worldwide,
thriving and continuously growing. The practice of this sport
has consolidated this position, allowing the development of
first class, golf courses in the most comfortable and luxurious
premises.
